Around 36 weeks into your
pregnancy, the possibility of meeting your child is tantalisingly close. The
location of the baby inside your uterus, whether or not her head is engaged,
and your preferences for the timing of your labor will all be noted by your
doctor. Additionally, your body may begin to exhibit symptoms that your child
may arrive soon.
Space and time
Your baby grows quickly in the
final four weeks of your pregnancy, gaining roughly 8 oz (225 g) per week. Your
uterus's inside becomes constrained, and instead of kicking, you may now feel
your baby wriggling around. Keep track of the movements and call the doctor
right away if your baby "sleeps" for a longer period of time than you
would anticipate or if her movements are weaker or less frequent than is
typical for her. In these final few weeks, your doctor will pay close attention
to the size of your tummy to determine whether your baby has enough amniotic
fluid to surround her and to make a final determination of the baby's birth
weight. The position of the baby will also be determined by the doctor by
palpating your abdomen. At this point, the presses could seem harsh and even
hurt you, but don't be concerned—they won't hurt your kid. She may be being
prodded into a better position by your doctor, who may also be checking to see
if she has engaged her head.

You'll notice that discussions
about labor will come up with your doctor during these final few weeks. You
will get the chance to review your birth plan and ask any last-minute
questions. Your doctor will go over the consequences for your labor if your
baby is in the breech position, or lying across your abdomen. You will be
encouraged to talk about them with your labor partner. The more knowledge you
can obtain now, the more confident you'll be about any decisions you might need
to make while you're in the delivery room. Keep in mind that labor is a
continually changing environment.
Waiting and observing
Many pregnant women excitedly
await the beginning of labor during the final few weeks of their pregnancy, and
some even try a variety of old wives' remedies to jumpstart the process. Your
amazing body is undergoing a variety of chemical changes right now, and they
can have a startling impact on your behavior, mood, and general wellbeing.
Engage in mind-body tasks that aren't strenuous to keep yourself occupied.
Learn to knit, sew, or crochet; plant some herbs in containers; spend an
afternoon watching movies; or read the book you've been meaning to read.
Avoid overdoing it, but try to
keep active to take your mind off the nagging "When" question. And
disregard any questions along the lines of, "Still no sign, then?"
Simply grin and shift the conversation.
